Abstract

The traditional process of code compliance checking of a building design is manual and depends only on the knowledge of the professionals involved, thus it is time-consuming and prone to errors. The checking of fire safety requirements is one of the most complex ones, given the large number of standards in force in this area. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the use of BIM and visual programming language applied to the automatic verification of emergency exit design requirements, according to Technical Instruction No. 11 of the Military Fire Department of the State of Bahia. A case study was conducted in which seven requirements of Technical Instruction No. 11 were selected to be converted into the visual programming language. Using the routines created, the rules were verified in two BIM models. The results of the checks were automatically generated in Excel and finally, the routines were evaluated for their usefulness and applicability. The tools showed great potential to make the process of checking regulatory requirements in projects faster and more reliable, reducing the manual effort and being a promising application to be expanded to verify other technical standards.
