Abstract

2020 brought a new reality worldwide: a global effort to control the coronavirus pandemic. The dynamics of the disease revealed specificities among different countries, and even among cities of the same country. Actions taken at the municipality level have shown greater relevance. This paper presents part of a research that explores a smart city approach during a pandemic scenario through an empirical perception. A case study in New York City has been conducted, through an analysis of government actions during the COVID-19 pandemic and its relationship to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) stablished by United Nations. The relevance of this analysis is justified as New York City was the epicenter of the pandemic during the first months, and also its’ recognition as a "smart city”, committed to the SDGs. Results provide information that can be adopted by cities from different countries, and suggest revising public policies, particularly considering that new crisis scenarios can always occur.
