It is a research developed in the master's degree in Architecture and Urbanism. The presence of domestic employees in high and middle income Brazilian households is a cultural factor. With the increasing verticalization process, the apartment buildings included the maid's dependence on the service sector and with distinct social access. The objective of the present article is to trace the trajectory of the maid dependency in the high multifamily buildings constructed in the Farol neighborhood in the city of Maceió/AL, during the period from 1960 to 2010. We used as a database the surveys carried out by gEPA/FAU/UFAL. It was observed that, in the 1960s and 1970s, all the apartments in the neighborhood were dependent on maids; only in the 1980s, the first apartment building with a reversible dormitory emerged. In the 1990s, maid dependency remained in the typologies of 3 and 4 bedroom apartments and only during the 2000s did the first apartments appear without maid’s dependence. It was concluded that the presence of maid dependence prevailed over the supply of apartments produced in the five decades analyzed, and that the changes announced by the 1988 labor legislation did not change the offer of the real estate market for users of higher incomes.
