Water end-uses in non-residential buildings: a systematic literature mapping

ABSTRACT:Water stress is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Considering this context, studies on water end-uses are very important to allow the implementation of alternative techniques for the conservation and rationalization of water consumption in buildings. Up to this date, most of the research has investigated water end uses within the residential sector. In this study, a systematic literaturemapping was carried out in order to understand the scientific production regarding water end-uses in non-residential buildings, which are considerably less explored. To this end, a time frame between the years 2000 and 2020 was established and the searches were carried out in online scientific libraries. Important variations were identified between the types of results and those values obtained in different studies. The authors also identified challenges in applying certain water consumption auditing techniques. The application of questionnaires was the most frequent technique. The mapping demonstrated the importance of conducting more in-depth studies on water end-uses, in order to obtain accurate and updated data to enable the implementation of water conservation techniques in non-residential buildings.
