Introduction - Systems with vegetation are gaining interest from designers as a new technology for facade cladding in buildings. This study has the objective of verifying the thermal performance of green walls and living walls and verify the influence of the Foliar Area Index (LAI). This work was developed using Energyplus and OpenStudio software to model prototypes at Campinas city. The analyzes were performed on a design day determined by Brazilian standard NBR 15575 and using the adaptative thermal comfort model suggested by ASHRAE 55. The simulation showed that metabolic effects of vegetation might contribute more than shading. For both direct and indirect green walls, LAI is a determinant variable in the performance of the system. In the simulated prototypes, the operative temperature decreased up to 2,7°C with vegetation facade systems. Although there are many challenges involved in simulating vegetation’s metabolic processes, it is exactly what amplify the performance and differ plants from other materials.
