Abstract

Working in the night shift and exposure to light in a period when most of the society sleeps causes health damage, resulting from the nocturnal suppression of the hormone melatonin, which is associated with the expression and worsening of certain diseases. Especially for night shift workers, the inadequacy between the hours of social activities and altered biological rhythms compromises brain functioning and results in sleep deprivation during working days. Thus, this study aims to present an approach to lighting design that is in line with the needs for performing visual tasks and with the demands of endogenous biological rhythms. Through computer simulation in the Dialux Evo 9.2 software, a new electrical lighting system was proposed for the chosen case study. The lighting requirements, described in the ABNT NBR ISO / CIE 8995-1 standard, was considered for the visual system and the Circadian Stimulus (CS) metric was considered to quantify the impact of the new lighting on the non-visual system. The results obtained so far show that, in general, in the teleoperator´s work area, the proposed lighting offers good conditions for the performance of work with comfort and safety, however, should not provide circadian stimulus for all workers. This analysis will be complemented, in a next step, based on the calculations for the other positions in this room. However, the partial results found already indicate differences between the lighting design aimed only at the visual needs and the one which also offers an adequate stimulus of the retinal ganglion cells.
