Abstract

Civil construction is knowen by several difficulties in its production process, such as workflow instability and uncertainty in decision making. Standard solutions relate to new technologies and management strategies, still failing to demonstrate results. Design Thinking appears as an innovative approach addressing a deep understanding of worker's issues and promoting sharing of ideas and perspectives to find creative solutions. The aim of this study is to investigate the use of DT applied in civil construction through a systematic literature review with 64 articles. As a result, the Stanford d.school (2010) five-step model was used to define and categorize the 10 tools found in the researched papers: (i) empathize (secondary research, ethnographic methods, persona and user journey); (ii) define (stakeholders map and point of view); (iii) ideate (brainstorming and co-creation); (iv) prototype (rapid prototypes and storyboard) and (v) test. This study contributes by presenting the use of DT in a context that has not yet been explored. It also offers insights for construction professionals to deal with problems in an interactive and dynamic way.
