Natural aging impact on the optical properties of glazed ceramic tiles

Abstract

The optical properties of materials can change over time as a result of natural aging. In order to compare the most representative samples within a group of twelve glazed ceramic tiles, two of these tiles with different initial absorptances (0.16 and 0.77) were selected. After 24 months of natural weathering, the optical properties of the samples (absorbance and emittance) were measured, in addition to the color parameters. The results demonstrate that the natural degradation of the tiles has a more significant impact on the cool sample, with an increase in absorbance, a small change in its thermal emittance, and a decrease in the “L” parameter of luminosity.
