Abstract

The double skin facade (DSF) consists of the addition of an external layer installed in front of the building's conventional facade, forming an intermediate space. Since few studies have investigated its impact on daylighting, especially considering the variables of the internal layer of the system, the objective of this article is to identify the influence of the window to wall ratio (WWR) and the glazing transmittance on the natural lighting that reaches a building with DSF at two latitudes (19°S and 53°S). Through parametric simulations, building models with different WWR (20% to 100%) and types of glass (transmittances of 41%, 62% and 81%) were compared. The results indicated that although none of the models presented acceptable lighting levels 100% of the time, the increase in the WWR corresponded to a constant increase in acceptable illumination for all types of glass tested, except for the 100% WRR in the models that used high-transmittance clear glass (81.3%). Therefore, considering the lowest latitude studied, the DSF design should consider clearer glass, while at the highest latitude evaluated, more absorptive glass proved to be more suitable.
