Influence of complexity on safety and production management in construction

Abstract

Although complexity is a critical topic in construction management, there is a gap in the literature regarding the systematization of complexity sources and how to manage them. Thus, this study aims to identify sources of complexity that influence requirements related to safety and production in the construction phase and the suggested management techniques. The research strategy adopted was a systematic literature review. From the analysis of 25 case units, technical, organizational, and environmental complexity sources were identified. Strategies for managing these complexity sources included communication among stakeholders and change management. This study provides a comprehensive view of complexity factors in building construction and highlights opportunities for future research, such as analyzing the combined effects of complexity factors and developing strategies focused on resilience.
