Abstract

Environmental analyses involve factors that directly influence the performance of buildings. The use of BIM technology in the search for more sustainable architectural solutions has become one of the most relevant topics to the construction field. It is essential for architecture education to equip students with the skills to address environmental challenges while embracing new technologies and innovations. This paper aims to illustrate how BIM technology can enhance environmental comfort teaching practices by examining the performance of solar incidence on building openings through a practical experiment. The experiment was conducted in the undergraduate course of Architecture and Urbanism at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The methodology adhered to design science research principles, tailored to the local context. This paper will detail the method used for analyzing solar incidence on openings. Results from the application of artifacts and practical exercises highlight the technology's potential in enriching undergraduate education in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) field. Additionally, the analysis of solar incidence provided insights into the evaluation of openings and informed modifications during the initial design phase, thereby increasing the accuracy of final project outcomes.
