Abstract

This study investigates more sustainable alternatives for urban freight transport in São Paulo, considering urban densification perspectives and the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. By using the metro-rail infrastructure to transport urban freight related to e-commerce, this work analyzes the energy and environmental impact of this solution compared to the traditional truck-based logistics model (control scenario). Operational data from freight transport companies and the metro-rail network were processed using tools like Python and QGIS to analyze the use of idle and dedicated wagons versus conventional road transport. The results show that the idle wagon scenario is superior, consuming about 184 times less energy and emitting approximately 104 times less greenhouse gases than the control scenario. It is concluded that this transport alternative is energetically and environmentally viable, constituting an innovative response for the Brazilian context, although there is a need for complementary analyses that encompass social and economic impacts.
