Abstract

Inspection of the dimensional quality of reinforcement of precast concrete elements requires millimetre precision. The terrestrial 3D laser scanner is one of the most used inspection equipment in this field due to its high precision. Previous studies point to equipment with a smaller scanning scope (handheld laser scanner and structured light cameras) as cheaper alternatives for capturing reality. This paper explores using smartphone videos to generate accurate 3D point clouds of reinforcement in precast concrete elements. The research method used was the case study. Partial results suggest that, although the use of smartphone videos to generate 3D point clouds may represent a more accessible alternative, further investigation is needed to assess its feasibility compared to traditional inspection methods, aiming to guarantee dimensional quality reinforcement of precast concrete elements.
