Abstract

Lighting is a determining factor in prolonging and enjoying activities that occurred only during the day. The new nocturnal habits demand a new social structure and the way of life guided by the intensity and volatility of its functions are reflected in the public space, where there is a greater variety of uses and new forms of interaction. This context inherent to the complexity of the 21st century metropolis is the starting point for more humane lighting, capable of combining adequate light levels with improvement in environmental quality and in the relationship between inhabitants and their public spaces. In previous studies, the significant complexity and multiple meanings of the Portuguese language modify the understanding of terms and evaluative questionnaires from other languages. This article aims to select and systematize terms that describe the nocturnal urban space in the Brazilian context. In this sense, images and described words were selected based on theoretical research, where the content was investigated through online questionnaires. The results shows that the selected terms coincides with the words attributed by the participants when assessing other environmental stimuli, but also there are some specifics terms that are adequate for Brazilian context.
