Treatment of greywater from washing machine with chemical and natural coagulants

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The Moringa oleifera (MO) is a natural coagulant that has been used for the treatment of superficial water and wastewater in order to the amount of chemical coagulants that are used for this end.    This work aims to compare the effects of the utilization of two chemical coagulants (aluminum sulphate – SA and calcium nitrate - NC), and a solution of Moringa oleifera extracted in calcium nitrate in the treatment of greywater from washing machine. The parameters evaluated was pH, turbidity and the sludge volume, whose results were compared using the Scott-Knott test to define the optimal dosages of each coagulant. For the SA, with 3 ml L-1, and allowed the reduction of 98,9% in the turbidity, with pH of 6,0, for MO+NC, was 25 ml L-1, with reduction of 98,8% in the turbidity and pH equal to 6,5. The use of NC exclusively provided the increase of turbidity in up to 19,3%. Considering only the parameters in study, it is verified that the treated water with MO+NC could be used for residential water reuse.
