The depletion of natural resources and the need for use cleaner sources of energy, especially with the continued growth of cities, make feasibility studies for the use of solar energy in social housing (SH) opportune. This work aimed at studying the economic viability of using the photovoltaic and solar thermal system as isolated or integrated systems for SH in the city of Belo Horizonte, MG. The study considers a multi-family housing complex as it was built and an alternative settlement designed according to Solar Envelope (SE) technique, which privileges the access to the sun. Four scenarios were elaborated for comparison, considering the current situation as a reference (scenario 1), the current situation with a photovoltaic system connected to the electricity grid (scenario 2), the current situation with an integrated photovoltaic and solar heating of water system (scenario 3) and the new settlement designed from the SE parameters with the integrated solar system. The results show that the solar photovoltaic system integrated with solar heating of water is the most viable system for SH multifamily buildings. The new design according to ES increased energy production by 58%, maintaining aspects of environmental quality in the buildings. Ordinance 643 was also an important factor for the economic viability of the project.
