Abstract

Phase Change Materials (PCMs) have gained great prominence by researchers and designers as passive cooling and heating technology in buildings. PCMs have a great capacity to absorb and dissipate heat during their phase change, maintaining constant temperature ranges. Incorporated into construction systems, they can provide thermal comfort in buildings and reduce energy consumption. PCMs show better performance in mild climates. Since there are few references about their use in Brazil, this study aims to investigate the potential of incorporating these materials in housings in South and part of Southeast of Brazil. Therefore, a systematic review of the literature was carried out on the whole-building energy simulation to evaluate the performance of PCM-enhanced housings under warm temperate fully humid climates. The Knowledge Development Process - Constructivist (ProKnow-C) was used as a methodology to select a relevant portfolio of articles that represent the state-of-the-art regarding this theme. The results indicated that the PCM application has a great potential to improve thermal comfort conditions and energy savings in housings located in the South and part of Southeast of Brazil. However, it is estimated the need for adjustments in current Brazilian building envelope systems to enable the proper incorporation of PCM into the climate. From this study, it is expected that further research will be developed to assess the potential impact of PCM applications in Brazil and to promote market awareness on this matter in the national territory.
