This paper compares the regulation compliance regarding the natural lighting minimum performance in areas with openings facing the building void, established both by the performance standard, ABNT NBR 15575: 2013, and by its propositional review, presented by the Review Study Commission, in 2019. The mathematical calculations and the static computational simulation methods were used to analyze the regulation ABNT NBR 15575:2013. For the propositional review, the abacus simplified method and the dynamic computational simulation were used. The open living room combined with the kitchen and the laundry area, located on the 1st and 4th floors with building voids, were analyzed in a social interest multifamily vertical building, for two distinct orientations, in three Brazilian cities. The results regarding the current regulation met, in all areas, the lowest natural lighting performance. On the other hand, the results regarding the propositional regulation review only met the criteria with the rooms located on the first floor in cities with the lowest latitude, after the number of ambient bounces was increased. The data seem to indicate the need for specific assessment criteria for areas with openings facing the building void. Otherwise, constructors will need to review, in a systemic way, their design, to meet the criteria proposed by the regulation propositional review.
