Abstract

Construction companies traditionally use earned value as a metric to assess project progress and performance in terms of time. A major drawback of this approach is that it is not a reliable measure if batch sizes are large, and when tasks are not properly finished due to the lack of process quality. Therefore, process-based indicators can contribute to increase the reliability of the result-based indicators, as they focus on evaluating performance in intermediate stages, while providing information during the execution to identify possible wastes and problems. This paper presents a tool for controlling task completion in location-based planning with the support of BIM. This tool consists of a matrix for monitoring batch completion, which produces a metric. The methodological approach adopted in this investigation was Design-Science Research. This research was conducted in six projects carried out by companies located in Brazil and Chile. The main contributions of this paper refer to the way the tool was used to monitor task completion. The proposed tool can provide an updated overview of production status, information about uncompleted critical tasks and existing constraints, and support decision making in production planning and control.
