Decision-making based on multiple criteria has been increasingly recognised in the selection of sustainable building strategies. This paper aims to conduct a literature review on choosing roof alternatives based on multiple criteria. It sought to verify the criteria and alternatives adopted, the methods used to determine the criteria weight and the performance of the alternatives. The criteria adopted generally represent the environmental, economic, social and technical dimensions, although they vary between studies. Around 88% of the studies included green roofs in the analysis. Less than half of the studies carried out computer simulations or experimental procedures to assess the performance of the roofs in each criterion. Regarding the evaluation methods, approximately 40% of the studies used the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) or one of its variants, either alone or in combination with another method. This study has contributed to the understanding of roofing methods from a holistic approach.
