Abstract

Buildings´ retrofit offers significant benefits from an economic, environmental and social point of view, being a promising alternative to reduce energy, water consumption and carbon emissions associated with materials. The school typology presents itself as significant due to the factor of education and transformation for students and educators. The main goal of this article is to present the sustainability guidelines considered in the retrofit of a school in the city of Florianópolis (SC), which aimed to achieve certification for buildings, becoming a zero energy building, through thermal and lighting comfort strategies combined with photovoltaic energy generation. The method presents the strategies incorporated during the design process with a focus on energy and comfort, through computer simulations, as well as the strategies used during the building's operation for a period of 2 years. The results show the challenges and solutions for retrofitting a building with its maintenance of efficiency over time, putting in a practical way the application of the concept of sustainability in buildings.
