Housing units are usually stigmatized to present problems related to energy efficiency and environmental comfort. The objective of the present work was then to verify the daylighting performance of an apartment considered as critical in the Serra Verde Housing in Belo Horizonte (MG). The design of the Housing was developed from an architectonic design provided by “Prefeitura Municipal de Belo Horizonte” in an autogestion process coordinated by professionals from PUC-MG with popular participation to make it more flexible to users. The work was made in 3 steps: critical apartment definition; dynamic daylight simulation; evaluation according to metrics and legislation. The results show the residential metrics are related to minimum values but do not address high illumination levels that could be related to overheating internal spaces. It is also concluded that popular participation allows the generation of designs that present good quality considering territorial singularities and may be a good alternative to the basic model of reproduction used throughout the country.
