Abstract

Assessing the operational energy performance is important to understand the energy use in buildings and to provide energy efficiency strategies based on reality. This article presents an analysis of the energy performance of a school building stock based on energy bills, grossfloor area and occupation. All data were provided by the Department of Education of Santa Catarina, and the analyses were divided into schools with low-voltage and high-voltage energy supply. Low-voltage schools were analysed based on the indicators of intensity of energy use as function of the gross-floor area and number of students (kWh/m².year and kWh/student.year). Based on the quartiles of the stock the typical, maximum and minimum performances were determined. In high-voltage schools we analysed the difference between contracted and measured demand, the peak and off-peak consumption. In addition, the consumption was correlated to the gross-floor area and number of students. Furthermore, an adjustment in demand contracting could provide significant financial savings in high-voltage schools. Finally, we concluded that there is a need for a method that considers subjective aspects in benchmarking the energy performance of school buildings.
