Abstract

Construction generates environmental impact and one of the main impacts is related to air pollution by particulate matter (PM). Current concerns indicate that it is necessary to deal with this challenge of the construction, understanding its influences and implications on air quality. This study investigated the concentration of PM (PM10 and Total Suspended Particles - TSP) from the earthmoving and foundation phase of one construction site, based on field monitoring. The experimental study was conducted at one building construction site over ten working days and more one non-working day for 24 h/day (12h daytime + 12h night time). 12 MiniVols were used to collect the suspended PM, Sticky Pads to collect the settleable particles and a meteorological station. About 132 and 38 samples were obtained for the MP and Sticky Pads, respectively. The results demonstrated that the construction site motivated an increase of the concentration of local levels of the particles, potentiating in greater instance the TSP followed by PM10. It was possible to identify high levels of nuisance caused by settleable particles. This article provides a better understanding of the concentration of PM in construction sites during earthmoving and foundation phase and presents knowledge for real situations from construction.
