Case study of the septic tank conditions of the university restaurant of the Araguaia Campus

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Basic sanitation is one of the basic rights of modern life and comprises a series of services, such as the collection, transport, and treatment of sanitary sewage. the object of this study is the septic tank system, which is still widely used for sewage collection. The septic tank studied is that of the university restaurant in Vale do Araguaia, where the overflow of the tank was found, which caused the leakage of decomposing organic matter on the surface and, consequently, the bad smell. The objective of this study is to identify possible causes for the appearance of this pathology in a system that must be watertight and durable and, for this, analyzes were carried out, such as: current sizing of the pit and sizing based on the average of meals served both for the pit and for the sink, soil infiltration profile, among others. After the analysis, errors were found in the execution, generating non-compliance with the standard in some aspects; an elevated infiltration area for the sinkhole and, also, a new sewage treatment facility was promoted by the campus itself, which was checked if its dimensions suit the use of the restaurant.
